ADD A CLASSIC TOUCH TO YOUR HOME WITH COPPER LAMPS FROM COPPERWORKS CANADA
add a unique touch to your home's interior. They give it an antique feel and provide a warm, inviting tone. But enjoying such beautiful ornaments does not come maintenance free. After all, copper does tarnish and may turn black or green over time. It requires regular cleaning to preserve its majestic look. There are several ways to maintain your copper lamps and fixtures. Below is a quick look at these methods.
Lacquer Or No Lacquer? That is the Question.
One of the most hassle-free and lasting ways to keep tarnish off your copper lamps is to have them coated with a few layers of lacquer. In time, you may need to reapply the lacquer, but this will be few and far between. Preserving their pristine, clean look in the mean time is as simple as dusting them from time to time, and occasionally washing them with regular kitchen soap or liquid detergent and warm water.
Yet, if you prefer the natural, unvarnished look of copper, there are a few solutions that you can employ which make use of basic items that you would normally carry around the house:
The Lemon and Salt Solution
To prepare, you will require a couple pieces of cloth, a half lemon, and some salt.
First, wipe down the lamp with a piece of cloth to remove any dirt and dust on the surface. Next, sprinkle some salt onto the half lemon. Use the half lemon to rub the lamp, covering all surface areas. Add more salt to the half lemon as you need it. Once done, use a cloth to wipe the lamp dry. You will notice that any tarnish that was on the lamp has faded away and that the glow has returned to its surface.
The Vinegar, Salt, and Flour Mixture
Another solution is creating a paste by mixing equal parts of vinegar, salt, and flour. In addition to those ingredients, you will also need a few pieces of cloth and some warm water.
Before you begin, you may want to take out the light bulbs and shades so as to not get in your way while cleaning the lamp. Like with the lemon and salt solution, you will want to start with removing any dust and dirt by wiping it down with a clean cloth. Next, apply the paste that you would have created from mixing the vinegar, salt, and flour to the surface of the lamp. Make sure to spread it evenly over the entire copper surface. This is to ensure that you get a consistent clean over the entire body of the lamp. Allow the paste to sit on the surface of the lamp for 15 – 20 minutes (For tougher spots, leave the paste on longer). This allows the acid from the vinegar to settle in and dissolve the tarnish. Next, use a wet cloth to gently rinse off the paste. You will notice that the shine has started returning to the copper surface. Finally, use another piece of cloth to dry the lamp and finish shining its surface.
